Very special 18 carat gold pocket watch by Jacot Bros. The watch belonged to the last Queen of Burma Queen Supayalat. The enamelled half hunter has inscriptions explaining the watch was purchased by the Viceroy of India Lord Dufferin and gifted along with a portrait he had commissioned of himself to Miss Fanny Blackwell. The British forces entered Mandalay in November 1885 and exiled the Royal King and Queen to India. They then “found” the watch in the Royal Palace and auctioned it along with other treasures in February 1886 upon whence the Viceroy bought it and gifted it to Miss Blackwell. There is also a letter from her Great Niece Clarice in 1960 explaining the history and further details to the rear of the portrait. Queen Supayalat returned to Burma after the death of her husband (although she was not permitted to return to Mandalay).
